I’m just back from the Derby Week in Louisville, KY where I was promoting Michelle Mandro’s book Wine Country Women of Napa Valley with three of the other vintners from her book, Lindsay Hoopes (Hoopes Family Wine), Suzanne Phifer-Pavitt (Phifer Pavitt Winery), and Elan Fayard (Fayard Wines). We were welcomed by many Louisvillians!
We started the week at the Backside of Churchill Downs and watched the horses warm up for the Oaks and Derby: Sunrise at the stables…
Our first event was held at the Castle & Key Distillery, just outside of Louisville. This is a must visit!! Marianne Eaves greeted us with her bourbon infused cocktails. Marianne is the first female master distiller! This event highlighted women in the food and beverage industry.
The food was out of this world. Chef Stephania Sharkey, a LEE Initiative Alumnus, prepared the freshest spring green salad…her course was five star, matching the beauty of the setting. I was proud to share 2015 CAMi Estate Red Wine, which paired perfectly with a chicken liver tart of radish, beet and rhubarb coulis. Wow! Thank you Chef Tanya Whitehouse of The University of Kentucky Food Connection. It was inspired.
The final courses were served up by Chef Ouita Michel of Holly Hill and Outia Michel Family Restaurants and Chef Samantha Fore of Tuk Tuk Sri Lankan Bites. Truly, a night of GIRL POWER!
We also shared our wines and signed books at The Old Stone Inn & Tavern.
The rest of the week included a hat fitting with milliner Christine Moore, a cocktail tasting at Angels Envy, dinner at Volare with Chopped winner, Chef Josh Moore, and a visit to one or two Speak Easies, the names are hard to recall…
Finally, with our hats on, we headed over to Churchill Downs to honor Breast Cancer survivors, like my grandmother, and to cheer on the fillies at the 2019 Oaks. I wore Pink!
What an amazing week in Kentucky!
